Injuries, Fitness and Recruitment – Reflecting on the Chairman’s Update
I welcome Chairman Matthew Beach’s October update and his acknowledgement that injuries significantly affected Parramatta’s 2026 season. While injuries undoubtedly hurt our performances, I believe our lack of aerobic endurance played a significant role in how we lost games, particularly our inability to maintain intensity and compete effectively over the full 80 minutes. Too often, we faded as matches progressed, allowing opposition teams to take control. In my view, our conditioning and ability to compete late in games deserve serious examination.
The Chairman also highlights recent recruitment and retention progress, including Spencer Leniu’s signing and Junior Paulo’s extension. These are welcome developments, but our recruitment and retention problems did not begin this season. I believe they were evident even before our 2022 Grand Final appearance. Building a competitive roster requires more than individual signings; it demands a consistent, long-term strategy for identifying, developing and retaining the right players.
I welcome Mike Rush’s appointment as CEO and the renewed focus on building a high-performance football organisation. My hope is that we address the underlying issues rather than simply attribute another disappointing season to injuries. Recruitment, retention and physical conditioning must all improve if Parramatta is to become a consistent premiership contender.
